Importance of HEPA Filters

Fire and combustion are synonymous. The short explanation of combustion is the break-down of a solid and becoming a gas. For this to happen there needs to be one other element added, heat. There are three elements needed for combustion: fuel, oxygen, and heat. In a perfect situation those three elements are equal, which would give off zero smoke, but that rarely happens. When these three elements are not equal smoke occurs. Smoke is airborne at first and after some time comes to rest on anything in contact of the fire. The reason we bring this up is to point out exactly how important Hepa filters are. Smoke particles range from .1 microns to about 4 microns. For a comparison, the average human hair is 75 to 100 microns! The average period at the end of this sentence is around 150 microns! Even though the smoke particles are that small our SERVPRO Hepa filters permanently trap 99.97% of the smoke particulate!
