Are You Prepared for Winter Weather in Austin?

Winter is Coming
The Old Farmer’s Almanac predicts winter snowfall to be near-to-above normal this year. This gives Austin and Albert Lea residents plenty of time to prepare for winter weather. September and October are forecast to have above-normal temperatures and low precipitation rates, so this will be a perfect time to inspect your home and repair any areas to prevent water intrusion in the coming months. Having a well-stocked emergency kit in the event of a power outage is essential. According to a report published by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), power outages from storms have doubled since 2003, and about 44 percent of these outages are storm-related. SERVPRO® of Austin & Albert Lea has been serving the Austin and Albert Lea communities for years and has helped many residents and commercial business owners repair property damage caused by storms. Here are some suggestions from the American Red Cross on how to prepare in advance for a power outage:
- Assemble an emergency preparedness kit
- Create a household evacuation plan that includes your pets
- Stay informed about your community’s risk and response plans
- Educate your family on how to use the Safe and Well Website
- Download the Emergency App for iPhone or Android
