“An emergency that took a long time to happen”: it sounds like a contradiction, right? It is a contradictory phrase, but it is something that happens when a slow leak suddenly makes itself known.

If your water bill has been increasing for months (without the addition of teenagers to the household), or you’ve heard dripping noises without being able to find the source, there may be a slow leak somewhere in the house.

Sometimes the leak gets too big to ignore because:

  • A pipe bursts
  • The floor or wall that shields the pipe turns squishy looking (ugh)
  • A puddle appears at the site of the drip
  • Someone happens to notice the source of the problem

If you notice an unpleasant musty odor, that means mold damage is likely as well.

If excess moisture is present for more than 24 to 48 hours, mold growth is a possibility, but even without mold, water is likely to cause damage, and will cause more damage over time.

At SERVPRO of Austin and Albert Lea, we are leaders in remediation of water damage.

We also help restore structures and belongings to preloss conditions.

Drip by Drip

Here’s something from the United States Department of Interior on water use

If one faucet in a house leaks 1 drip of water in a minute (which is a slow leak), that’s a waste of 2.9 gallons a month, for a waste of just under 35 gallons of water a year.

A typical leak, however, is 10 drips a minute, which is a waste of 29 gallons a month, for a total of 348 gallons a year.

We usually notice those leaks. Toilet leaks, appliance drips, and problems with toilet flows are the big problems – they waste the most water, and the causes of the most water damage.
